Throughout 2024, SHARE Architects responded to invitations to curate juries for national architecture competitions in four Central and Southeastern European countries: the Bulgarian Architectural Awards, the Malta Architecture Awards, the 2024 Architecture Biennale Kosovo, and the MUST—Festival of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism in Iași, Romania.

The “Bulgarian Architecture Awards,” organized by the Chamber of Architects Bulgaria in partnership with SHARE Architects, is the country’s most significant professional and non-commercial architectural competition. It distinguishes good practices and quality works of architectural art regardless of budget, size, or function.

In the 2024 edition, the sixth in the competition’s history, the projects submitted were awarded in two categories, determined by two separate juries. The first category was for contemporary architecture, which has been implemented in the last 3 years. The projects submitted to it were evaluated by an international jury chaired by Arne Emerson, a partner in Morphosis (US), including Peter Pichler – Italy, Judith Cimpian – Great Britain, Busra Al – Turkey, and Georgi Kutov, winner of the “Bulgarian Architecture Awards 2023”. All of them are members of SHARE Architects Society.

The second category was for preserving cultural and historical heritage projects implemented in the last 5 years. A separate 5-member jury determined the winners in this category under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Arch. Todor Krastev: Prof. Dr. Arch. Yordanka Kandulkova, arch. Chavdar Georgiev, Dr. Arch. Aneta Vasileva and arch. Veneta Ivanova.

At Malta Architecture Awards 2024, SHARE Architects had the honor of being invited by the organizers, The Kamra tal-Periti (Chamber of Architects and Civil Engineers), to curate the international jury panel that selected the finalists and which has decided the winner of the prestigious Premju Emanuele Luigi Galizia.

In addition to the Grand Prize (Overall Award), the jury also awarded prizes in 7 core categories (design excellence, community impact, interior architecture, heritage preservation, landscape architecture, architecture vision, and innovation), two special categories (emerging practice and climate action), and two role model categories (architecture leadership and lifetime achievement).

The Jury features five esteemed members of the SHARE Architects Society, who bring a wealth of experience and international perspectives to this prestigious architectural award: Simonetta Cenci, Partner at Ateliers Alfonso Femia (Italy), Isabel van Haute, Founding Partner of Coldefy & Associés Architectes Urbanistes (France), Davide Macullo, Founder of Davide Macullo Architects (Switzerland), Thomas Coldefy, Founding Partners of Coldefy & Associés Architectes Urbanistes (France), and Giuseppe Farris, Founder of Studio Farris (Belgium).

Seven distinguished architectural figures, members of the SHARE Architects Society, form the jury for the 2024 Architecture Biennale on 22 November in Prishtina, Kosovo.

The jury members were:

– Davide Macullo, Founder of Davide Macullo Architects, Switzerland

– Teuta Jashari, Associate Professor, Dr. Eng. Arch., Vice Dean, Faculty of Architecture, University of Prishtina, Kosovo

– Maurizio Meossi, Associate Director at Zaha Hadid Architects, UK

– Burak Pekoglu, Founder of BINAA Studio, Turkey

– Besian Mehmeti, Founder of BMA Architects, North Macedonia

– Ani Tola, Vice Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, University of Tirana, Albania

It was a pleasure and an honor to curate this jury at the invitation of the Kosovo Association of Architects and its president, Bledion Baraliu, Co-founder and Managing Director of archiEDU.

In Romania, SHARE Architects curated the jury for the Moldova Regional Architecture Exhibition 2024 in Iași, organized by the Order of Architects of Romania, Iași Branch. This long-standing event aims at the architectural community in the North-East region of the country and the Republic of Moldova.

The architectural competition was judged by a panel curated by the SHARE Architects Society, consisting of the following international and local personalities:

– Roberto Beraldo, President of Ordine degli Architetti Pianificatori Paesaggisti e Conservatori Venezia

– Emil Ivănescu, President of the Order of Architects of Romania (OAR) and author of the Romanian Pavilion at the 2023 Venice Biennale

– Alkis Dikaios, Founding Partner at David + Dikaios Associates (Cyprus)

– Giorgi Sulaberidze, Founder of Artsudio Project (Georgia)

– Tomaz Kristof, Director of Studiokrištof (Slovenia)

– Christos Christodoulou, Founder of SIMPRAXIS (Cyprus)

SHARE Architects has also responded to the request from the Order of Architects of Romania (OAR) – Iași Branch, contributing to part of the content for The MUST – Festival of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism in Iași, Romania, held this year from October 21–25.

As part of the festival, SHARE Architects organized a public debate at the Central University Library (BCU) on the theme of Public Space, featuring four prominent guest speakers in architecture: Peter Murray, Founder of New London Architecture (UK); Reiner Schmidt, Landscape Architect (Germany); Ideal Vejsa, Founder of Maden Group (Kosovo), and Tiberiu Florescu, President of the Romanian Register of Urban Planners.

The MUST Festival, an extensive event launched in 2015, aims to bring architecture closer to the Iași community while fostering a platform for idea exchange between architects from the Moldova region and national and international professionals.

SHARE Architects’ contributions to these flagship events align with the organization’s founding mission to support and enrich architectural communities in the countries it serves.

The country’s most significant forum dedicated to architecture, concluded successfully on November 7 in Bucharest, bringing together influential architects, designers, engineers, and industry experts from across Romania and around the world.

Over the course of two days, SHARE Romania 2024 hosted leading figures in architecture representing renowned studios like Foster + Partners, Kengo Kuma Architects, MAD Architects (China), Nemesi (Italy), RMJM (UK), Teampannon (Hungary), André Pizzuto (Malta), and Petras Architecture (Greece).

On the first day, participants joined one of two SHARE Experts Meeting sections: Fire Safety & Facade Design and Sustainable Facade Design. In the second part of the day, the two sections united for presentations and discussions led by experts (architects, engineers, and representatives of specialized institutions and firms) on topics like fire protection systems for facades, suspended ceilings, and floating floors.

The first session of the first day was about Fire Safety & Facade Designone, and there were at least six presentations of innovative technical solutions. Emil Serb presented fire protection solutions by Aluprof Romania; fire protection systems for facades, suspended ceilings, and floating floors were discussed by Radu Vieru, General Manager of Proventus Solutions, and improving building security with safe access solutions was presented by Oana Andrei, the expert at KADRA.

Dana Badea, Product Manager at Alukönigstahl Romania, spoke about fire protection for glazed facades. At the same time, Alexandru Ciucă, Technical Manager at Isopan Est, taught about ensuring fire protection in buildings using thermal insulation panels. ROCKWOOL Group also delivered a technical presentation.

Interventions from beneficiaries, those who think and design buildings, and architecture firms complemented the series of experts in fire protection solutions and systems.

Presentations were also made by Kover Orsolya Maria (Syka’z Design & Consultancy), Mariana Turcu (X Architecture & Engineering Consult), Lilian Captari (U R B a N O F F I C E), Dragos Marcu (Popp & Associates), Adrian Zerva (STUDIO 10 M), Raluca Soaita (Tesseract Architecture).

Over 20 case studies presented and discussed as exemplary sustainable architecture projects, presentations on innovative technical solutions, an “Ask an Expert” session, and concluding with a debate moderated by Andre Pizzuto, Managing Architect and Design Principal from Malta, and Sergiu C. Petrea (Tecto Arhitectura), on the topic of “Advanced Building Skins” with two special guests: Javier Villar Ruiz, Principal at Javier Villar Architectural Designers JVAD / OCA PROJECTS, Spain, and Luca Aldrighi, Director at RMJM, UK.

This was, in brief, the agenda for the second session on the first day of SHARE Romania 2024.

Sergiu Petrea, founder of TECTO Arhitectura and Vice President of the Romanian Association for Sustainable Local Development, co-moderated alongside Professor Bogdan Andrei Fezi, Vice President of the Order of Architects of Romania. Petrea shared three notable case studies that exemplified the shift from efficiency to effectiveness in sustainable architecture.

Prominent guest speakers included Iulia Stancu from STARH, Sorin Istudor from Skaarchitects, Tsampikos Petrās, Principal Architect at Petrās Architecture (Greece), and Varga Bence, Partner at M-Teampannon Architects (Hungary), who explored the evolution of architectural design in diverse cultural contexts.

The day also featured a highly anticipated “Ask an Expert” session. Dr. Diana Culescu, Vice President of the Bucharest-Ilfov branch of the Romanian Association of Landscape Architects, offered her insights on the intersection of architecture and landscape design.

We celebrated Romanian architecture at every opportunity, and at SHARE Romania 2024 – International Architecture Forum, we invited four representative local architecture studios to showcase their projects under the umbrella concept “Blueprints of Innovation.” These were STARH, Artline, 9Opțiune, and AriConsult.

Under the title Public Square Recovery, STARH’s exhibition focused on one of the studio’s recent projects that revived the public impact of one of Bucharest’s most significant areas through conversion, openness, urban artifacts, and a green, sustainable approach.

Artline, an architecture studio based in Bucharest and founded in 1994 by Radu Teaca, summarized the studio’s activity over its three decades of existence, highlighting the evolution and diversity of its projects in terms of programs, materials, and scale.

The third exhibiting studio, ARI Consult, founded by Razvan-Ion Dracea, showcased a highly diverse portfolio encompassing various architectural styles. 9 Opțiune, from Maramureș, exhibited under the title REHABILITATED HERITAGE – PUBLIC SPACE RETURNED TO THE COMMUNITY.

One of the event’s most poignant moments was the SHARE Opera Omnia Award ceremony, where the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the architectural firm STUDIO10M Zerva, Croitoru, Medvedovici Associated Architects.

The award, handed by Florin Mindirigiu, founder of the SHARE Architects Society, and Șerban Țigănaș, honorary president, was presented to the Bucharest-based studio “for remarkable achievements in architecture and their role in developing significant architectural projects throughout their career.” The honor was accepted by the studio’s founders, Florin Medvedovici and Adrian Zerva.

Over the years, SHARE Architects has awarded the SHARE OPERA OMNIA AWARD to more than 30 remarkable architectural figures from 14 Central and Southeastern European countries.

Day 2 of SHARE Romania 2024, titled Inspire & Design, was filled with presentations from world-renowned architectural firms and an in-depth look at successful projects from across the globe.

Notable speakers included Luca Aldrighi, Director at RMJM (UK), who shared insights from his firm’s groundbreaking projects, such as Sanko HQ (Turkey) and Quayside Masterplan (Malaysia), both of which exemplify the integration of sustainability with innovative design. Italian architect Michele Mole of Nemesi discussed four projects, including the Palazzo Italia, created for Expo 2015 in Milan, demonstrating the importance of blending aesthetics with functionality in contemporary architecture.

Other influential voices included Dorin Ștefan, founder of DSBA, who presented Balcony Corridor Residence, and Laura Narvaez, Partner at Foster + Partners, who captivated the audience with her story about the New Slussen Masterplan in Sweden, one of Europe’s most significant urban transformation projects.

From the renowned Japanese firm Kengo Kuma and Associates, Javier Villar Ruiz, a partner since 2013, presented the new headquarters project for the technology company Bosonit in Logroño, Spain. We then had the opportunity to hear from Varga Bence, Senior Architect and Partner at Teampannon in Hungary, who presented the House of Hungarian Music project in Budapest, which he led under the guidance of Sou Fujimoto Architects. We also welcomed Giovanni Colombara, an architectural designer at MAD Architects (China), one of the world’s largest architecture firms, who discussed several case studies, including Quzhou Sports Park and Shenzhen Bay Culture Park.

The second day also featured cutting-edge technical presentations from SHARE Romania’s esteemed partners, including Şişecam Flat Glass, Aluprof – Romania, Isopan, Reynaers Aluminium Romania, Zumtobel, QFort, MCA Grup Romania, Proventuss Solutions, and PPG Romania.

Also, on the second day, four architecture firms from Romania showcased their award-winning projects at the Radisson Blu Hotel Bucharest. Ana Chiprian presented the projects from Empatic Studio, Cezara Țînțăreanu from ADNBA, Carmen Tănase from Enterprise Architecture & Design, and Raluca Șoaită from Tesseract Architecture.

Alongside the other finalist projects for the SHARE Architecture Awards 2024—75 in total from 16 Central and Southeastern European countries, including the winning ones—the Romanian firms’ projects were also showcased in a dedicated exhibition at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

We were also honored by the presence and presentation of Vladimir Arsene, founder of Westfourth in 1991, a New York-based firm and recipient of numerous awards, including two from the prestigious American Institute of Architects. The Romanian architect also participated in a debate on the “Future of Architecture,” which concluded the forum. As part of the SHARE Romania 2024—International Architecture Forum, held in Bucharest on November 6-7, the SHARE Architects Society presented the Lifetime Achievement Award, SHARE OPERA OMNIA AWARD, to the architectural firm STUDIO10M Zerva, Croitoru, Medvedovici Associated Architects.

The distinction, handed over by Florin Mindirigiu, Founder of the SHARE Architects Society, and Șerban Țigănaș, its Honorary President, was awarded to the Bucharest-based firm “for remarkable achievements in the field of architecture, as well as for its role in developing significant architectural projects throughout its career.” The award was received by the studio’s two founders, Florin Medvedovici and Adrian Zerva.

The two architects “are being celebrated today for what they have accomplished together with the teams they have formed, guided, and mentored,” as expressed by Șerban Țigănaș in a Laudatio delivered to the audience and the studio’s founders.

“Florin Medvedovici and Adrian Zerva are STUDIO10M, Zerva, Croitoru, Medvedovici, an architecture firm that has demonstrated professional maturity over more than three decades of transition and development in post-communist Romania. They have completed and continue to develop projects for this era’s major foreign and domestic investors. The pillars of their career as architects—expressed singularly due to the convergence they have achieved—are their profession, projects, architecture, and the legacy they are building.”

STUDIO10M Zerva, Croitoru, Medvedovici Associated Architects boasts an impressive portfolio of projects, iconic buildings, and award-winning works. Among the best-known, mainly in Bucharest, Șerban Țigănaș highlighted: Mobexpert, Swann Office Park, Piața Obor, Piața Timpuri Noi, Dacia One, Țiriac Tower, Polonă 7, and the Domeniile Coroanei Segarcea Winery.

“The architecture of those celebrated today is robust, serious, looking toward classical modernism but also contemporary aspirations, always in search of balance,” added Șerban Țigănaș.

The Laudatio concluded by emphasizing “the architectural and human legacy, the ideas, projects, achievements, experience passed on to young professionals, the teaching workshop and the marketplace atelier, as well as the support for young partners at Outbox Studio,” for which the two architects are honored “here and now.”

Over the years, SHARE Architects has awarded the SHARE OPERA OMNIA AWARD to more than 30 remarkable architectural figures from 14 Central and Eastern European countries.

At SHARE Romania 2024, held in Bucharest on November 6-7, four representative local architecture studios were invited to showcase their projects, which they considered the most relevant, under the umbrella concept Blueprints of Innovation. These studios were STARH, Artline, 9Opțiune, and AriConsult.

STARH is a multi-award-winning architecture firm founded in 1996 by Iulia and Florian Stanciu, both professors at the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest. In addition to numerous local competitions, STARH has won several international competitions for projects such as the OAR Bucharest Headquarters (2014), the National Museum of History in Bucharest (2016), the Cluj City Hall (2019), Brașov Central Square (2022), and the DN3C Park in Constanța (2022).

Under the title Public Square Recovery, the STARH exhibition focused on one of the firm’s most recent projects, which revitalized the latent public impact of one of Bucharest’s most significant areas through conversion, openness, urban artifacts, and a sustainable green approach.

Artline is a Bucharest-based architecture firm founded in 1994 by Radu Teacă. It boasts an impressive portfolio of highly regarded projects, numerous awards, and citations in prestigious international books and publications.

The Artline exhibition at SHARE Romania 2024 summarized the firm’s activity over its three decades of existence, highlighting the evolution and diversity of its projects in terms of programs, materials, and scale.

Founded in the same year, 1994, the third exhibitor, ARI Consult, presented a highly diverse portfolio encompassing a wide range of architectural styles. One of its recent projects, Casa Melcului, was shortlisted for the SHARE Architects Awards 2024. Like its peers at Artline, ARI Consult’s exhibition at SHARE Romania 2024 reflected on its three decades of activity under the title ARI Consult – 30 Years of Architectural Design: Crafting Spaces, Shaping Lives.

The fourth exhibitor, 9 Opțiune, hailed from northern Romania, in Maramureș, and exhibited under the title Rehabilitated Heritage – Public Space Returned to the Community. “Architecture must be more than building walls; it must ignite the spirit and soul of the place,” said Ștefan Paskucz, founder of 9 Opțiune, based in Baia Mare.

The four exhibitions were inaugurated on November 6 during The SHARE Architects Society Networking Evening. Each studio presented its manifesto, after which the audience was guided on a tour of each section.

The event was supported by or valued partners: Șișecam, Isopan, Reynaers Aluminum, Alukönigstahl, and Zumtobel.

The winners and finalists projects for the SHARE Architecture Awards 2024—75 in total from 16 Central and Southeastern European countries—were showcased in a dedicated exhibition at the Radisson Blu Hotel on 7 November at SHARE Romania 2024.

Designed by architect Damir Iuliana Georgiana, this exhibition began its journey in Athens and will travel across various major European cities throughout the year. After its launch in Athens, the first stop occurred on October 24 in Iași, Romania.

Meanwhile, The Overall Winner project, InnoRenew CoE, was presented to the audience at SHARE Serbia 2024, which took place on November 26 at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Old Mill Belgrade. Slovenian architect Eva Prelovšek Niemelä, co-founder of Innorenew CoE, told the story of the project.

Before the opening ceremony of the exposition in Bucharest, four architecture firms from Romania were invited to showcased on the forum scene their award-winning projects at SHARE Architecture Awards 2024.

The four winning projects that were presented in detail included: the Alpine Shelter Staircase project by Empatic Studio, which won in the Sport & Wellness category; the Rossetti Aparthotel project in Bucharest by Enterprise Architecture & Design, which won in the Hotels – Restaurants & Bars category; the Marie Curie Children’s Hospital project by Tesseract Architecture, which won in the Healthcare category; and the Urban Spaces 5 / Sfinții Voievozi 20-24 Apartment Building project in Bucharest by ADN Birou de Arhitectură, which won in the Multi-Unit Residential category.

The Overall Winner project presented at SHARE Serbia 2024 is the InnoRenew CoE Institute building, the largest wooden building in Slovenia today. The design of the building had a complex task beyond that of a functional building: to demonstrate how the physical transformation of a place defined as post-industrial could bring new spirit and sociotechnical development by creating an engaging scientific hub.

Their project also won the Winner for the “WORKPLACE – OFFICES/INSTITUTIONAL” Category.

InnoRenew CoE is an independent research institute established in 2017. Research targets renewable materials and sustainable buildings, specifically innovative approaches to wood and its use, to transfer scientific knowledge into industrial practice.

Stefano Capranico, Associate Director at UNStudio, will be guest speaker at SHARE Interiors Bucharest, talking about the remarkable projects of the world-renowned practice and sharing his take on rethinking new great heights in architecture

Stefano Capranico is Associate Director at the globally acclaimed practice UNStudio, having previously served as the Head of Architecture and Interior Design at Pininfarina. He graduated from the Turin Polytechnic Faculty of Architecture in 2007. During his time at Pininfarina, he played a pivotal role in leading the design of prestigious projects such as the Juventus Stadium in Turin, the Cyrela Tower in São Paulo, and Ferra in Singapore. In the 9 years that he has been part of the UNStudio team, he has been involved in successful international competition participations and ground-breaking projects such as FOUR Frankfurt, IPAI – AI Innovation Campus in Helbronn, Eclipse in Dusseldorf, Überseequartier in Hamburg and many others. During his complex professional journey, he gained an extensive experience, shaped by always working in challenging projects defined by superlatives, gargantuan buildings and vast developments, always being in charge of thinking at very high level. Engaged in thought-provoking designs, Stefano Capranico operated mostly on high-rises, from conception to execution, while also stating that beyond the architecture, there is undoubtedly taken into account the unique social, cultural, and economic contexts of each country in which the buildings are implanted.

Certainly one of the most impressive work he had his hands on has been FOUR Frankfurt — four new high-rise towers reaching heights of 228 meters, with a multi-storey plinth and housing mixed-use programmes, large public spaces and incorporated subsidised housing — which will define Frankfurt’s skyline and a new image of cosmopolitan urbanism, right in the centre of the city. A development with this level of urban effect is particularly timely, as Frankfurt is currently aspiring for an even bigger role on the European stage and UNStudio is taking up the mission to be involved in this type of urban transition.

Another outstanding project that Stefano Capranico played a part in is Eclipse, an elegant vertical work campus rising 60 metres above the ground, located in Dusseldorf and home to the auditing and consulting firm PwC Germany. The overall vision for this intervention is one of transparency and an open gesture towards the surrounding neighbourhood. There is a smooth transition from the outside to the inside where an inviting interior lobby welcomes the visitors.

The interior houses inspiring communication and experience areas, while the lively atria form the spine of the building. The use of powerful colours and the generous light which invades the spaces make the interior a vibrant effervescent environment, ideal for the purpose of the building.

The backbone of the vertical campus is a three-dimensional helix, formed by a series of interior atrium spaces spiralling upwards along the facade. This connects various office programmes and culminates in a panoramic roof garden. The main goal of the design for the campus is to encourage interaction and to nurture creativity by providing an inspirational and attractive work environment for today’s talent.

Kamran Afshar Naderi, architect and artist, co-founder of KAN Artworks & Memar Magazine, will be a guest speaker at SHARE Interiors Bucharest, bringing a valuable contribution to the panels of discussions

Kamran Afshar Naderi is a distinguished Iranian architect, furniture designer, artist dealing with sculpture and painting, architectural critic, prolific writer, co-founder of Memar Magazine and Memar Awards for architecture, co-founder of the practice KAN. He is an experienced lecturer and a frequent guest speaker at universities and conferences in several Asian and European Countries, as he has delivered numerous speeches about architectural criticism and architectural theory in Iran, Switzerland, Kuwait, Turkey, Cyprus and Italy. Being deeply interested in research, he is author of more than 200 articles and 3 books about Iranian contemporary and ancient architecture.

He has been a regular member in juries all around the world (Iran, India, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Cyprus), but especially at the Memar award which is considered the most important architectural prize in Iran. His multifaceted profile does not stop at these roles mentioned above, Kamran Afshar Naderi being also a Branch Manager of an international engineering company Intertecno Company in Iran, dealing with marketing and management.

His professional career began in 1986 in Italy, shortly after his graduation from University of Genoa in the field of architecture. For a few years, he was a collaborator in several well-known Italian and international companies such as Renzo Piano Building Workshop. As a design team member, he was involved in Kansai Airport (Osaka) and Lingotto rehabilitation projects (Turin). During his long residence in Italy, he contributed to several industrial and urban design projects. In 1993, he established his own office in Tehran. Since then, he has been working on numerous projects for international organisations and companies: Italian Embassy, Italian School, Danish Embassy, Austrian Embassy, Netherlands Embassy, Japanese Embassy, Norwegian Embassy, UNDP, World Bank, Nuovo Pignone, Shell, MAN Ferrostaal, Bayer, Festo and Ebara. The work of his office has been distinguished with prestigious awards, among which A’Design Award, Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award.

The architect believes: “Architecture is the law of the complex nature of various topics from philosophy and sociology to mathematics and technology. Because of direct contact with human life, it is full of elements and spaces that have a deep cultural meaning and a very strong sentimental induction. The architecture is a form-design discussion and requires a balance between the effects of sensory moment and stable perception of the space. The art of architecture is in order to bring space.”

As a designer, Kamran Afshar Naderi has created many distinctive pieces. One of the most acclaimed ones is his first limited edition set of furniture, “The Guardians”, which received the silver prize, in A’ Design Award and Competition, being also exhibited at Niavaran Cultural Center and the Guest house of the Italian Embassy. His art projects constitute a particular frame of work, being invested with special and deep meanings beyond the excellent craft. For his creations, Kamran Afshar Naderi draws inspiration from nature, mythology, ancient geometry and Renaissance perspective. Reflective steel, wood, cement, brass ceramics and paint are his preferred materials. Among his endeavours, the Tree of Life exhibited at IFCM Institute in Lyon, France holds a special place. The conception of the large sculptural panel is a story in itself, having behind it many challenges, trials, and errors. The execution lasted 18 months and involved a team of 40 people among artists, artisans, architects, and engineers.

Colin Burry, Design Director Gensler, London, will be a speaker at SHARE Interiors Bucharest, offering insights into his creative approach and extensive experience

Colin Burry is Principal and Design Director at Gensler, a practice that he has been involved in for nearly 27 years, initially in San Francisco and for the last 3 years in London. His work has been widely recognised and enjoys frequent coverage in international design and business media. Colin Burry has received over 85 design awards, was included into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 2013 and was considered by San Francisco Magazine as one of the top 100 most influential LGBTQ leaders in the Bay Area. Gensler has been for him a platform where he could find limitless freedom of expression and possibility to operate differently in various projects and challenges. He is a hands-on type of designer while continuously being involved in the process of learning.

He has been a long-term advocate of design education, championing the advancement of the Interior Design profession through legislative action and continued learning opportunities. In his own suggestive words, Collin Burry describes himself as a “left and right brain designer, creating environments that reflect the client’s ethos, while striving for authenticity and intuitive functionality “. Taking into careful consideration the needs and requests of the people who will use his spaces, he seeks originality, distinctiveness and design choices which are in line with his own way of thinking. He considers himself a  “soft modernist” or a “humanistic modernist” due to the fact that he uses contemporary thinking and techniques to evoke results that garner exceptional human experiences. Collin Burry has restless enthusiasm and he openly embraces artistic influences to stimulate his design process and guides his clients to look for extraordinary places and spaces.

His large expertise ranges from workplace to hospitality, product design, showrooms, Food & Beverage facilities. One of the projects he takes great pride in is the San Francisco International Airports Terminal 2 which was recently rated #4 in the world for passenger experience. He was fortunate to work with great clients and design for many of the world’s most iconic brands, such as Netflix, LEGO, Ericsson, pladis, Barclays, Apple, Airbnb, Facebook, Pixar, Nike, Samsung, and Nokia. His design ethos has been described by many of his clients as “thoughtful, thought provoking and supportive of his clients long term strategic goals”.

His visions are greatly influenced by his passion for contemporary art, music, photography, travel, and ballet, as he believes that inspiration comes greatly from life experiences, not only from the professional field. In this way, he is also interested in how his designs influence the experience of the users, how his projects end up modelling behaviours, thus leading to a design attitude which is creative, original, but also careful, sensitive and responsible. This position is taken on not only individually by Colin Burry, but by the whole practice of Gensler.

Being conscious that they can shape and impact lives with their projects, Gensler put people at the centre of everything they do, aiming at creating purposeful, inclusive, and resilient spaces for everyone. Beyond the physical definitions of architecture, they strive at building positive experiences.
